Inequalities in higher education participation and attainment persist worldwide, with students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds at least twice as likely to enter and complete university, while gender parity has been achieved in only a small number of countries. The new global study World Access to Higher Education Network (WAHEN), Drawing the Global Access Map 2, covering data from over 200 countries, shows that progress is uneven and fragile, and that policy and cultural factors matter as much as national income. As lead author Graeme Atherton warns, urgent, coordinated global action is needed to prioritise equity in higher education systems.
